This recipe is from a cooking class I conducted at a nonprofit organization for young girls, all less than 16 years of age. I was amazed to see their interest and how they were eager to learn. When I was asked to conduct this class, I thought something as basic as French toast would be easier as a beginner’s recipe so they can try it for family and friends.
Growing up, I always adored French toast but it was always the classic version without the syrup. When I came to the US, I started making it for my husband. And yes, he would want it with chocolate syrup with bananas, almonds or fresh fruit. So, I started experimenting with it. I’ll come back with my other versions like caramel banana, almond chocolate chip and stuffed french toast- yumm !! Now back to the recipe…
It's my daughters favourite. I've been making for her since she was a little kid. A great addition to your kids lunch box too. This recipe only takes about 15 minutes to make, and is super easy. You can eat with your fingers – something that no kid, big and small, can possibly resist! A great breakfast / brunch recipe!

French Toast Sticks
Yield: 4-6 servings
Prep time: 5 min
Total cooking Time: 10 min
8 slices day old white bread
4 large eggs
1 cup heavy cream
8 tbsp sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
Unsalted butter, for cooking
Maple syrup, for serving
Cut each bread slice into four sticks. Set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, sugar and vanilla. Mix well with a whisk until combined. Dip each piece of bread in the egg mixture, turning only once to coat on both sides so that it's well-saturated with the custard (don't let it sit in the custard) Set aside.
Repeat the dipping process with the remaining pieces of bread. Heat a large sauté pan over medium heat and add 2 to 3 tablespoons of butter. Once the butter has melted, place 4 to 6 coated sticks in a single layer in the pan (Do not overcrowd the pan)
Cook until golden brown on one side then flip and continue cooking until the sticks are golden brown and slightly crisped on all edges.
Serve with maple syrup and fruit.
